Is It 5 a Day???




Who else is confused on how many fruits and veggies we should be getting every day?
Well I decided to check it out for you. We are suppose to be eating 5 servings of fruits AND 5 servings of veggies everyday. No wonder we aren't getting enough fiber right! To help you clarify just how much you should eat I am listing the serving size of the most common fruits and veggies.

Remember we "Fight Fat with Fiber". If it's the only thing you do this week to improve your fat loss efforts this is the one to go for!

Fruit

1 medium apple, orange, or pear
1/2 if large
1/4 cup of dried fruit3/4 cup (6 ounces) of 100% fruit or vegetable juice
1/2 cup grapes, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, ect.

Vegetables

1 cup of leafy vegetables, spinach, romaine lettuce, ect.1/2 cup of cooked or raw vegetables, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, green beans, ect.

Juice 6oz. 100% fruit or vegetable
Dried fruit 1/4 cup raisins, prunes, dried apricots, etc.

So getting 5 servings of fruit would be like having 1 large apple, 1 large orange and a handful of blueberries. 5 servings of Veggies would be 1 cup of spinach salad, 1 tomato, 1 cup of broccoli, and a handful of carrots. Not bad right? You could knock out the fruits in breakfast and your 2 snacks. Then your veggies at lunch and dinner or lunch, snack and dinner. You will fill up with less calories and shed fat FAST!

Chocolate Banana Pancakes

Who says pancakes are fattening? Not these! Slim down your tummy with these quick yummy chocolate banana pancakes. Even your KIDS will love these!



Chocolate Banana Pancake
1 serving

1 egg
2 egg whites
1 tbls coaco
2 dash cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla (real extract)
1 banana
1 tsp coconut oil
(optional peanut butter for topping, real organic butter or real maple syrup)

How To Lose Weight Over The Holidays!


Need some real life tips to get you through the holidays? Follow these through the New Year to keep off those 5-10lbs most people gain! That wont be you this year! Use these 6 tips to get sexy over the holidays this year.

1. Dream a little about what you REALLY want, not about what you think is possible. What do you REALLY want?

2. Write it down! Keep it with you in your purse and another copy beside your bed, in your suitcase, and in your car. Where ever you will be this holiday season. Read it morning & night. Anytime you get an urge to binge on fast food or dessert. Just think about your goal and it will pass within 15min.

3. Drink 1 liter of water per 50lbs of body weight.

4. Whenever you leave the house make sure you have a snack, an apple, string cheese, and raw almonds work perfect on the go. Keep this in your car and in your purse.

5. Don't give yourself a free pass to eat everything in site for a week! The holidays are not a free pass to put your weight loss on hold! This will only set you back 5-10lbs

6. Do stock up on your multi-vitamin, omgea's (fish oil), & vitamin D (prograde has THE best vitamins and omega's (fatty acids...efa's). There is a link there on the right if you are looking for a great source. Your vitamins and omega's will ward off hunger and speed up your metabolism.

Are You Getting Enough Iron?




Im not talking about pumping iron this time either. If you are low on iron you could have low energy, iron is a mineral that our bodies need. Iron is a part of all cells and does many things.

For example, iron (as part of the protein hemoglobin) carries oxygen from our lungs throughout our bodies. Having too little hemoglobin is called anemia. Iron also helps our muscles store and use oxygen. which is obviously very important while working out and trying to lose weight.

Enzymes help our bodies digest food and also help with many other important reactions that occur within our bodies. Also very important when trying to tone up and lose weight. When our bodies don’t have enough iron, many parts of our bodies are affected.
You should get your iron levels tested by your doctor but I have put together a list of foods that you can incorperate into your diet in order to get more iron in your meals.

  • Chicken liver (eww)

  • Oysters
  • Soy beans, mature
  • Pumpkin and Squash seeds roasted

Vitamin D and Weight Loss





Clearly, vitamin D seems to be very important in regulating our weight. There is a correlation between rising rates of obesity and vitamin D deficiency.

If you are having difficulty with insulin resistance or weight gain — or can’t keep the pounds off once you lose them — you may want to have your vitamin D levels checked by your doctor.

Just recently I read that Vitamin D helps regulate your hormones....and what do your hormones regulate? Your weight! Well I'm not telling you if you go out and take your Vitamin D every day you will lose weight. But if you have been struggling with those last few pounds and have been sticking to your clean meal plans and workouts. This may be key in getting your body back in balance.
Living in Washington we miss the sun in the winter. We have been pretty blessed this year as it seems to be shining more often. But my point is no matter where you live if your not getting your Vitamin D from the sun you should be taking 1000-2000 IU per day.

Vitamin D also helps with "Seasonal Affective Disorder" (seasonal depression). Amongst other awesome benefits such as fighting menopause, and osteoporosis, and cancer.
You should be tested by your doctor for deficiency. It could be worth the 15 min. to see if you are.

What Should You Buy Organic?


Of the 43 different fruit and vegetable categories tested, these 12 fruits and vegetables had the highest pesticide load, making them the most important to buy or grow organic:


Peaches

Apples

Sweet bell peppers

Celery

Nectarines

Strawberries

Cherries

Lettuce

Grapes (imported)

Pears

Spinach

Potatoes


Strawberries were found to be highly toxic due to a poisonous blend of pesticides in a previous 2007 EU study as well. But be VERY careful as the list above is for fruits and vegetables. Non-organic meats have higher concentrations of pesticides than all of the fruits and vegetables. The highest concentration of pesticides is in non-organic butter. So if you can only buy one organic food item it should be butter. Next priority would be meats and once those are addressed, you will want to focus on the fruit and vegetable list above.

Here are some quick morning meals that will help us feel full but stay true to our clean eating. These are a few of my favorte old stand by breakfasts.
Banana Pancake
2 whole organic eggs
1 banana
dash of cinnamon
Mix in blender or a handheld mixer is really nice. Melt 1 tbs organic butter on med heat in pan. Once butter is melted pour batter into pan and let brown on one side then flip. Once both sides are browned whaalaa you have breakfast! You can sub banana for any other fruit play around with it it sounds weird but it's really yummy!
Berry Smoothie
1/2 cup organic lowfat yogurt with live cultures
1 cup of frozen berries
1 tbls natural peanut butter (fresh ground, adams, or organic from costco)
1 scoop protien powder (vanilla is the best in this) this is the best I have found here
Mix in blender or handheld mixer. Whaalaa another whole meal and cures the sweet tooth too!
Peanut Butter indudgence
1/3 cup organic cottage cheese
1 scoop chocolate protein powder
2 tsp natural peanut butter (fresh ground, adams, or organic from costco)
2 tbls flax meal
Mix all ingredients with spoon/fork in a bowl (use hand held mixer for smoother texter). This is so rich thick and delicious! Dont let the ingredients turn you off.
Egg & Veggie Scramble
1 cup frozen mixed veggies ( broccoli, carrots, califlower)
1 whole organic egg
2 egg whites
2 tbls salsa
Heat veggies in pan on med heat. Once veggies are thawed add egg and egg whites, scramble together then add salsa. Add hot sauce or crushed red pepper for more spice!
There you have it my favorite morning meals to get out the door in a hurry. Practice on the weekend to see how long it will take you to make and eat these. It only takes me about 10 min to make and 10 to eat at the very most.

Carmel's "I Want Skinny Jeans For Christmas!" Contest


So I got so sick of myself I decided to do something about it...again....


I have been starting things like "getting serious" since before summer started. I just wasn't able to stick with it. Was getting lazy, busy, had the wrong additude.


So with new determination and a little more incentive I decided to go at it again. Changed my workouts, the time of day I workout and started tracking my meals.


WOWA!!! I was eating wayyyyyyy too much!!! It was all clean foods, so I thought I was in the clear. Much to my suprise when I started logging them into Sparkpeople.com I realized I was way off.


First thing I did was decide how many cals I should eat.


Second chose a workout I would like to stick to for 4 weeks.


Third I joined a member site to talk to other people who are achieving the same goals I am and come from the same places I have been. This support I cant put a price on and I'm not trying to be all sales-y here Im totally dead serious! I have only been doing this 2 weeks and had a VERY hard busy week this past week and needed their support encouragment and "I know what you mean" comments. It never hurts to make more friends and help them through their struggles too. After all that's why I decided to become a trainer, I love helping people get results...I know what it feels like to feel gross and discusted about myself. I will post my original post of what I was feeling when I started this. Look for it at the end if you want to read it.

To determine my goals I thought about what I wanted my end result to be and then used that to count down what I would have to do each 4 weeks. It is realistic to lose 1-2lbs a week and 1-2% of BodyFat a month. Pant sizes are a little more difficult to determine since all brands run different. I wear american eagle jeans so I just go by what those feel like. Im thinking 1/2 size a month.


So there ya have it my personal struggles and goals! I will keep a log here of my results.

Nobody fed me anything I couldn't of said no to and there is always 15min here and there to get my workouts in. No excuses!


I deserve so much more than what I have been giving myself. I have done this before and I know I can do it again. Only this time I wont have to be researching and figuring out what works. I KNOW my stuff now....which is what makes it so irratating!!!

Is my Diet Coke making me FAT?


In my practice as a nutritionist and personal trainer, new clients are always coming to me telling me they are doing everything they are “supposed” to be doing, but still, do not lose weight. Of course, this is frustrating. Losing weight is hard enough, and to change your eating habits and still see no results, that’s even more frustrating.


So why do these people not lose weight? If I had to pick the most common reason why most people’s efforts have proved no results, I would say it is the deception of artificial sweeteners and processed diet foods. Yes, you heard right. It is the diet coke, diet snacks, processed foods and artificial sweetener in your coffee that is keeping you fat.



So how is this so?



Artificial sweeteners overwhelm your liver
Your liver is your largest internal organ, and it’s responsible for an astonishing variety of life-sustaining and health-promoting tasks, including those that make healthy weight loss and weight management possible. Integral to countless metabolic processes, the liver supports the digestive system, controls blood sugar and regulates fat storage. One of your liver’s most important functions, and the most crucial to your weight loss, is chemically breaking down everything that enters your body, from healthy vegetables, to not so healthy fast food, from healthy water to not so healthy soda.



It’s your liver’s job to distinguish between the nutrients you need to absorb and the dangerous or unnecessary substances that must be filtered out of your bloodstream. But when the liver is clogged and overwhelmed with toxins, like artificial sweeteners, it can’t do a very effective job of processing nutrients and fats. If it can not process the nutrients and fats that your body needs, this will cause you to gain weight or will prevent you from losing weight.



Your liver also produces bile, a crucial substance for detoxifying our bodies. It is the job of bile to help our bodies break down the fats we need and to assimilate fat-soluble vitamins. But when our bile becomes overly congested with the toxins it’s trying to filter out, it simply can’t function properly. It becomes thick, viscous and highly inefficient in breaking down fats. The result: You are more likely to gain weight and to have a greater difficulty losing it. So the more toxic your body becomes, the more difficulty you’ll have losing weight and keeping it off because your liver just can not work properly to break down fat.



Are artificial sweeteners considered a toxin?
So what qualifies something as a “toxin”? A toxin is anything that your body does not recognize as a natural food source. The reason why artificial sweeteners have “zero” calories is because your body does not recognize them as a food source. For example, the chemical process to make Splenda (sucralose) alters the chemical composition of the sugar so much that it is somehow converted to a completely different molecule than sugar. This type of “fake” sugar molecule does not occur in nature and therefore your body does not possess the ability to properly metabolize it. This is how the makers of Splenda claim that it has zero calories, because in theory it should not be digested or metabolized by the body (Although it has been shown that some people’s body do absorb up to 15% of the artificial sweeteners they ingest). So the more artificial sweeteners that you consume in one day, the more you are overwhelming your liver with toxins and the less able it is to do its job of processing fat. And what happens if the liver can’t do its job? You can’t lose weight or worse yet, you gain weight.



What if you don’t use artificial sweeteners? Don’t be fooled. Almost every diet product on the market has some kind of artificial sweetener added to it. Even some children’s snacks are now being made with sucralose (Splenda) and most flavored waters contain sucralose or aspartame.
Now add up how many things you eat in one day that contain some form of artificial sweetener. The list may be very long. How overwhelmed do you think your liver is? Does it have the ability to work properly? Even if you keep your calories at bay and only drink Diet Coke with your meals, will you truly get down to the weight that you want, and stay there? It has been in my experience that the answer is “no” and until you are ready to commit yourself to a healthy way of eating, weight loss will always be a constant struggle.



What else do sweeteners do?



Sweeteners increase appetite
Artificial sweeteners tell your taste buds that, “sweet stuff has arrived,” which to the brain means, “nutrition has arrived.” When artificial sweetened drink or food reaches the small intestine, the receptors find no nutrition. A message is then sent back to the brain saying, “We’ve been tricked-there’s no nutrition here.” The appestat (the part of your brain that triggers satiety) sends the message to “keep eating because we need nutrition to help process all this fake food and run your body.” So even after you eat a good portioned healthy meal (along with your diet coke) you still feel like your starving all day, or you become very hungry soon after. Your healthy eating efforts may be sabotaged if you continue to feel hungry all day. No one likes to feel hungry so you continue to eat more food until you feel satisfied, which in your effort to lose weight, may just be too much.



Sweeteners Increase our Sweet Tooth
Saccharin (Sweet n Low) is 300 times sweeter than sugar, aspartame (Equal) is 200 times sweeter than sugar and sucralose (splenda) is 600 times sweeter than sugar. Such sweeteners can only increase our sweet tooth and increase our taste of sweet things. If you can never get rid of your sugar cravings, any healthy eating plan will be difficult because you will constantly be craving “sweet”. Artificial sweeteners have also shown to promote the same blood sugar fluctuations as regular sugar, which, again will bring on “sugar lows” which will increase appetite and cravings. This is not to say, that something sweet now and again is not ok, but it is those people who can not control their sugar cravings that are being sabotaged by these artificial sweeteners.



What are some alternatives to sweeteners?
Giving up sugar and artificial sweeteners may be difficult, especially if you are accustomed to everything having such a sweet taste. A wonderful alternative to sugar and artificial sweeteners is an herb called Stevia. Stevia is an extraordinarily sweet herb, 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia is almost calorie-free, so it is perfect for people who are watching their weight. Unlike sugar, it does not trigger a rise in blood sugar so you will not get a sudden burst of energy followed by fatigue and a need for another “fix”. It increases energy and aids digestion by stimulating the pancreas. Stevia also presents great advantages over saccharine and other artificial sweeteners in that it is not toxic. Stevia is a plant that is found in nature and is not man-made in a laboratory. Stevia can be found at almost all health food stores such as Whole Foods, and is listed under the “supplement” section. Stevia can be used exactly like sugar and artificial sweeteners to sweeten drinks and it can even be used in baking.



If weight loss or staying away from sweets has always been a problem for you, take notice of how much artificial sweetener you have been ingesting. That just may be the culprit. Make a resolution this year to give up the “fake” stuff and stick to natural alternatives like Stevia. You will not only be helping your weight loss efforts but you will also be benefiting your health.

Tea Juice
5-6 bags of any caffeine free herbal tea of your choice (green tea, peach tea, berry tea, orange zinger, lemon, etc.)
3 quarts water
Stevia powder or liquid to taste
Boil tea bags in a large pot. Add 1-2 full teaspoons of stevia while still hot. (You may add more or less, based on your desired sweetness) Let tea cool and then transfer to the refrigerator in Ice Tea pitchers or individual size water bottles.

Can You Finially Reach Your Goals?


As you may or may not know I am a raving fan of Dax Moy. I have tried his Elimination Diet and now use it with clients to achieve exceptional results.


So a few weeks ago I decided to check out his Magic Hundred program. It is all about setting and acheiving goals in a short period of time. Really applying yourself to what you want and getting it. It actually MAKES you dream again, like many of us have forgotten how to do.


We just go day in and day out same ol thing, different day. But what would you say if someone told you, you could be on your way to (insert day dream here....lol) within the next 100 days?


I read through the program got excited about starting it, wrote down some hopes and dreams and went to bed...got up fed my family, went to work, came home, fed my family, blogged, went to bed and so on as my life goes. Us Last Oct in Vegas!

I am SO EXCITED to take some down time!



This weekend starts today for me. My Best Friend comes to town today and we will get to sit around and chat till the wee hours of the morning, soak up the sun together, share a bottle of wine and just have some good girl FUN! We haven't seen eachother since last Oct., that was in Vegas....Yep THAT was fun too!

Not only are most traditional ab workouts a waste of time, but they also slow your fat loss efforts. Each workout you spend crunching takes time away from more effective fat loss methods - such as interval training.


That's right, the common man's (and woman's) ab workout taken from Shape magazine or Muscle'n'Fitness often hurts their fat loss program more than it helps it.


Remember - I'm in the business of getting you the most fat loss in the least amount of exercise time...so I have little room in myprogram for traditional ab crunches (with the exception of usingbasic ab exercises for beginners who need to learn to use their ab muscles after a lifetime of inactivity).




Instead, I focus on exercises that build a 6-pack AND burn a lot of calories at the same time. That's why I'm a big fan of making EVERY exercise an ab exercise (by bracing the abs in every movement), as well as using total body ab exercises (such as Mountain Climbers, the Spiderman Lunge/Climb, and the Stability Ball Jackknife).




These exercises use far more muscle mass than a traditional crunch. In fact, some of the total body ab exercises are "interval-like" in nature, helping to put more metabolic turbulence on the body, and as you know, that's what burns calories during AND after the workout.




Now of course you know that you can't spot reduce the fat on your body - so doing an endless number of crunches not only does little for you in terms of losing fat, it also wastes your time in your quest for a 6-pack.




Here are a couple of strategies to maximize your workout time when your goal is to get lean, and get down to a low-enough body fat percentage to see your abs in as little workout time as possible:




(If you've got 2 hours a day to workout, by all means, do whatever your heart desires...but I don't think many of us that live in the real world have that kind of time.)


A) First, simply cut back on your ab training - If your goal is tosimply lose fat, gain a little muscle, and just look as goodpossible, then you can't spend 30 minutes on abs everyday. You can build your 6-pack by doing less than 30 minutes of ab exercise per week.


I'm convinced that no one (not even a fitness model or probodybuilder) needs more than 30 minutes of ab training per week.


In fact, at the photoshoots I supervise for the fitness magazines,I get to talk to a lot of fitness models and what they tell meabout their training routines might shock you. Most of them don't train nearly as frequently as you or I might think.


Instead, they've worked hard over the years with the basic lifts to build their body, and now many of them simply use nutrition and maintenance workouts to keep their abs showing.


B) Second, replace your crunches with the total body ab exercises I mentioned earlier. Also, if you have access to a cable machine, you can do weighted ab exercises such as kneeling cable crunches.


C) And finally, if you are doing intervals for fat loss as Irecommend, you can use the following approach to increase thedifficulty of your ab and interval training. However, this is anadvanced method only. Beginners should stick to the TT guidelines in their manual.


During your interval workout, perform an ab exercise during your active recovery period. For example, if you are doing running intervals on a treadmill...


Run for 60 seconds at your work interval speed. Immediately stop the treadmill, get off, and go into a set of 20 Mountain Climbers. Climb back on the treadmill and start it up for your next interval. Repeat for 3-6 intervals.


You can also use basic spinal stabilization "ab exercises" such asthe plank, side plank, or advanced plank versions (i.e. plank with your arms on the ball) to train your spinal stabilization while under heavy breathing stress. I learned this technique from Dr. Stuart McGill.


Remember: Always train safe, with good form, and be conservative. Don't try to be a hero in the gym, but you should safely challenge yourself in each workout.

How do you get rid of the flabby thighs??

If you really want to get rid of those thunder thighs you have to use compound exercises! Try these on for size....




  • Sumo squats with dumbbells or smith machine 15x3


  • Stability ball leg curls 15x3


  • Romainian deadlifts with dumbbells or barbell 15x3


  • Side lunges with medicine ball swing 15 each side x3


  • Walking lunges with a twist using a medicine ball 15 each side x3

With these exercises you will be working your whole body! Tone your arms and abs while melting fat off of your thighs and butt too!

How Important is Your Circle of Support?









What do you think? We have always heard it is important to have support when you are trying to quit smoking, drinking or lose weight. So what happens when you have negative people around you when you are trying to get healthy and make yourself better all around? I never realized how important this was until the other day when I was talking to a friend who was having trouble in a friendship of hers. This person was being so negative about anything she was doing that was good for her. Ever had that happen to you? Well I have, I'm sure most of us have. After we talked for about an hour about other stuff she brought up how frustrated and hurt she was by this other friend again.






The people we talk to and hang out with really do effect us, good or bad. So why not hang with friends who make us feel good about ourselves and the things we are doing to make ourselves better?






Surround yourself with those who think you are wonderful and love you. Those who tell you how great you are doing and who may have the same type of dreams and goals as you do. You will find life much more enjoyable and your goals much easier to reach!
